Dido Belles | 1760-1790 Leather Shoes

Dido Elizabeth Belle (1761 – July 1804) was a British heiress and a member of the Lindsay family of Evelix. She was born into slavery by Maria Belle, an enslaved African woman in the British West Indies. Her father was Sir John Lindsay, a British career naval officer who was stationed there.

Made from the highest quality leather, the shoes are each handmade and lined with fine calfskin. The shoes are standard width and feature a hard, thick leather sole, perfect for use in camp or inside a fine home. The lachets should be secured with a buckle or a simple ribbon. Buckles are sold separately and can be found here. Ribbon is sold separately and can be found here.

    Love these!

These are even nicer in person than I expected from the picture. They fit very true to size and feel wonderful on my feet. The leather molded almost instantly to fit, and fitting the buckles was easier than I anticipated. I just wish Samson Historical made 19th-century button boots!

Dido Belles, A Great Conversation Piece

Very interesting and pretty shoes. I thought they came with a ribbon closure as I'm not a fan of buckles and did not order one. The photographs did not make it clear that the shoe does not come with any closure. They are very, very slippery. The first thing I did after putting them on was slip and fall down. These shoes are on a shelf so I can look at them, and I've showed them to a few people who thought they were really neat but they aren't very wearable.

The description does state that shoes do not come with the closure. It says, "Ribbon is sold separately and can be found here." The sole is an all leather sole, as described. Like any leather-soled shoe, they should be stuffed to the user's desire for needed traction. Wearing these on a paved road or sidewalk will do the trick. These shoes are extremely wearable, as many people enjoy wearing the shoes. If you are unfamiliar with the wearing of 18th-century style shoes, please let us know so we can further assist you.

    Loving these shoes

Fit is a little snug, but nothing that can’t be adjusted with stretching and breaking them in. Going up in size would make them too large. I ordered my normal size. Haven’t had a chance to wear them at an event (due to the current healthcare situation), but they have proven comfortable around the house.
