Greatcoats were sometimes called overcoats or watchcoats. Worn as the outermost layer, this medium weight wool is great for shedding water and keeping the chill away without being overly clunky. In This is available in two readily documented period colors. The navy was likely the more common color based on what we see in period art and texts, however there is documentation for a wide variety of colors.

I think this is a good value for the price paid. Admittedly it is a little light and not of the highest quality wool, but overall a really great value. I've now worn it twice over the top of my shirt, waistcoat, and linen coat for a jaunt last week into the woods for a squirrel hunt, and all day yesterday to a winter event at Old Fort Niagara. It really works well -- cuts the wind without undo bulk. I was warm and had good mobility. I'm just a tad under 46" chest and with the layers I had on the fit for me was perfect. Perhaps not a garment for the snobby stitch counters, but a really good, useful, and cost effective product. I'm glad I bought it. P.S.: Samson's customer Service is great.
