Appearing more like a sea monster, this 18th century tamper would have been reffered to as a dolphin in the period. The curved tail and large lips are very standard in period "dolphin" motifs. Nautical themed ephemera like pipes, tampers, and more were popular in an era so dependant on ships for transcontinental travel and trade.
