Fluted Shell Black

Stem length is about 5.25 inches to the base of the bowl (about 3.125 to the beginning of banding). The bowl design is alternated raised flutes and inlaid groves.

The bowl of this pipe is almost identical to one found in the midden at Mount Vernon (in white) except the small fern on the bottom front of the bowl is a makers mark on the fragment. The bands on the stem is 5 rows of lattice work.

The black pipe is made of the same clay as the white, however it is blackened in the firing process during production.
