This style is considered half-boned vs fully boned. The half-boned stays have strategically placed stiff boning to give the wearer the proper shape. These are available in durable natural colored linen, with a cotton lining. The straps are securely sewn to the inside of the stays, not the binding, so they can be easily removed without damaging the structure of the garment. These stays come with a boned stomacher as well.
There are not that many good options out there for front-lacing stays, but these fit the bill. Are they the most glamourous? No. They are a basic set of stays that will to break a budget but still accomplish what you need. The linen was perhaps a bit rougher than I expected but still feels appropriate for less than upper class wear.
I am short waisted so I did end up doing some slight modifications -- but I expected that. In my case that meant taking out the center back stays as they were just too much and dug too deep against my tailbone. I also removed the shoulder straps and converted them to the bias tape cross back method that American Duchess has posted about.
Even with the modifications I put in I give it a full 5 stars (mainly because I knew going into it that I would likely need to modify it. I am very used to that given my build). Hands down better than making my own (at least for now!)
