I have purchased many hats in a search for what I call the perfect hat, My search has ended. This hat is unimproved, but like clay can be molded to the desired shape, it is STIFF, if this bothers you this is not the hat for you, it is like a hardhat, but retains its shape. I trimmed the brim to 3 3/4", Hand sewed in an adjustable drawstring liner, steamed and shaped to what I was looking for. I look forward to wearing it to many camps to come, Great hat! Plus I got it on sale.
This hat is not a floppy felt hat but is a very solid wool hat that is a great item to use to work on and give it your own personality. I only wish that I would have purchased this hat years ago.
Understand this is a project and you will have a lot to do to it to make it what you want. That being said, I'm fairly happy with it. It is well blocked, and very stiff. The brim is about 4 3/4", and the crown is circular. I soaked mine in a flower pot coaster overnight and they used bricks to flatten the crown. That worked, but be warned, the felt if VERY overdyed and you will leach a ton of dye out of it, as I did. I cut the brim down to 3 1/2", sewed in a linen liner (no leather sweatband) and after it formed to my long oval head, it actually fits quite nicely. I measure 7 3/4, and the XL size is well fitting. Overall, know you have some work to do on it, but a decent hat to work with.
